How to use Positive Affirmations

The key is to choose one that resonates for you personally, and to repeat it to yourself every day, several times a day.

You can also have more than one if you would like to set you up for the day, or to focus on a specific area of your life such as finance, work, health, etc.

Start with choosing the area of your life or a feeling you want to address.

Then find one affirmation that resonates for you … if you are not familiar with using affirmations, a quick internet search will bring up hundreds to choose from to help you!

Next, write it down by hand (not on your phone) – there is more cognitive processing when we write by hand rather than type.

“I am in the process of positive change” – Louise Hay, motivational author

Put your affirmation somewhere where you will see it every day – a post-it note on your fridge on bathroom mirror, in your handbag or wallet, in your diary, on your bedside table.

This also acts as a reminder to use it daily as you will be creating a new habit in saying a daily affirmation and may need reminding at first.

Then, every day repeat it to yourself, for at least one minute a day.

The positive effect is enhanced if you also:

  • Say it out loud

  • Look at yourself in the mirror as you repeat your affirmation – this can be done while doing your make-up, shaving or cleaning your teeth

  • Use it before you get out of bed, setting the intention before the day gets busy

  • Repeat your affirmation/s one minute a day, three times a day (e.g. on rising, at lunch and before bed)

  • Grab a journal and write it down over and over again for 1-5 minutes (as if you were doing lines at school!)

  • Repeat it to yourself as you sew a Mindful Threads needlepoint kit!
